Responding to a sense of missed opportunity, Toronto artist Harrison made a freestyle meets wavy synth-funk earworm of a jam with the track Celica Supra. It’s the first from his forthcoming sophomore album, due this fall via Last Gang Records. His début, Checkpoint Titanium, received a 2017 JUNO nomination for Electronic Album of the Year and spawned two Prism-Prize-nominated videos.
In this video, clips of break dancers synched to his music display intricate moves and fashion styles from thirty years ago. These bold splashes of culture, seemingly quite carefree, fail to display the hard-hitting parameters that the art form blossomed within. Harrison has stated, “those videos from the late 80s and 90s are footage from a period I idolize but was never around to experience.” The footage communicates the brighter moments without the struggles that plagued inner-cities during that time period.
These alluring breakdancing performances, against the electro track by Harrison, lay the historical foundation of what would become Hip-Hop culture.
